Whitney Cummings Baltimore reviews
I usually love Whitney's comedy but this show was a bit of a disappointment. The show was apparently scheduled for 7:30 to 9:00. She didn't come out until 7:45 and she finished at 8:45 so that the audience could take selfies with her in the background and the hall could be cleared out at 9:00.
An HBO special recently aired featuring Whitney. Because of that she chose not to do the same material, which I appreciate. However, it didn't seem like she had any material actually prepared. Instead it was a 1/2 hour of some political talk and engaging with the audience - all VERY funny - and another 1/2 hour telling old jokes from a Donald Trump roast 5 or 6 years ago - some funny, but mostly dated jokes.
I did appreciate how Whitney handled the hecklers who tried to be part of her show. She laughed it off and did what good comedians do - turn it into jokes. It was only when they became disrespectful and rude that she had to shut them down.
Overall, I still love Whitney and will definitely go to another show, just not after a TV special has just aired.
Passive aggressive staff.
First of all, the show itself was great. The opening act was funny. Whitney then came on stage holding a stack of paper, which I assumed were notes, but she never referred to them. She was very funny, but the crowd seemed to be mostly existing fans so they would laugh at even her smallest jokes. She abruptly ended the show saying she needed to save time for book signing and pictures. They set up a table on stage, where she signed books (non-personalized) and took pictures using audience members' phones. Afterwards, people could then go to a "photo booth" machine for an additional picture to commemorate the event.
However, I didn't like a staff member's passive aggressive attitude. I am not sure if this was a venue staff member or a Whitney staff member. After I met Whitney on stage, I went to the photo booth machine just like other fans and stood in a long line. Almost immediately, this staff person came up to me (and only me) and said something like "You can take a picture at this booth, but you don't have to. It's not required." Um, I think any fan would know that. So I stayed in line. Moments later, this staff came back to me and said something like "Can you move aside? You're in the background of other peoples' pictures". But the other people waiting in line were ALSO in the background of the pictures! This staff member had ONLY me walk out of line to stand on the other side, out of the camera's view. It felt so exclusionary. Nobody should have to feel singled out like this. I can't think of any good reason for that staff to do that. I was wearing jeans and a t-shirt, like many other fans who were there. Feeling singled out, I then just left without getting my photo booth pic. I hope even Whitney agrees that even if a show is otherwise 5 stars, a fan feeling like this should automatically reduce it to zero stars.
Professionalism
We are huge comedy and standup fans. Not our first time seeing Whitney, not our last. Having said that we walked away shaking our heads. Whitney's set was GREAT. The show started between 30 and 60 minutes late. I don't need or want an excuse, things happen. But it was foreshadowing of bad things to come. The openers were a disaster. The podcast showrunner isn't an entertainer and shouldn't be asked to attempt. Benton Ray was almost acceptable, as a longtime standup patron, I have seen many worse openers, so CHEERS to Benton. Saving the worst for last, sending the woman form the bachlorette show to waste our time was at best unprofessional. Announced as a special guest, I did not realize the real meaning of "special". The worst form of garbage I have ever seen.
Thoughtful, energetic, back to back jokes. No filler.
I had the pleasure of seeing Whitney Cummings arrive at the show. I was there early standing outside with others and saw her and waved. The show was very good. Not a full moment and they don’t waste time. Very organized. The floor seats are comfortable with plenty leg room as I was in the second row.
What stood out for me after the show Whitney Cummings did meet and greets. I’m a veteran but I enjoy comedy and laughing. I went to the show by myself cause my new girlfriend couldn’t attend due to prior engagements. I asked Whitney if she could send an audio sound byte to wish her a happy birthday. She one upped me and sent a video message wishing her a happy birthday and became a super wing man for me giving me kudos which she didn’t have to do. Next time I see Whitney I’m gonna make sure my girlfriend attends. Might be a special night in advance….Kind Youthful Nurturing Admiring (inside joke for my gf)
